Significance

An ionene of a cinchonidine derivative was prepared and applied to an asymmetric benzylation. Thus, the reaction of N-diphenylmethylidene glycine t-butyl ester with benzyl bromide was carried out with the ionene to give (S)-N-(diphenylmethylene)phenylalanine t-butyl ester in 83% yield with 86% ee (one example).
