Significance

This seemingly simple transformation opens up a modular synthesis to monomers of a structural class that was only previously accessed by condensation reactions under strongly acidic dehydrating conditions at high temperatures. This gentle condensation reaction allows the synthesis of a variety of different materials with high yields.
