Significance

The phase-transfer-catalyzed intramolecular cyclization of ortho-alkynyl phenyl ether derivatives for the synthesis of 2,3-disubstituted benzo[b]furans is described. The authors obtained products 2 in good to excellent yields using PTC-1 as the catalyst. This work is the first ­example of an intramolecular cyclization of the corresponding ortho-alkynyl phenyl ethers by phase-transfer catalysis.
