Significance

Compounds 1-4 were synthesized from fullerene and the bow-tie shape of 1 and 2 ­allows them to form 2D and 3D smectic meso­phases, respectively. The alignment within a ­liquid crystal phase means the emissive central hoop-shaped [10]cyclophenacene moiety (shown in red) exhibits anisotropic luminescence with a quantum yield of 21%.
