Significance
An enantioselective conjugate addition of 3-aryloxindoles 2 to β-nitrostyrenes 3 has been reported to proceed without the need for base additives in the presence of quaternary ammonium phase-transfer catalyst 1. Conjugate adducts 4 were obtained in high yields with high enantioselectivity. Application of the reaction conditions to 3-methyloxindole resulted in low reactivity and enantioselectivity (product 5).
