Significance

Gold nanoparticles Au/AlO(OH) were prepared by mixing HAuCl4 hydrate, Al(Os-Bu)3, and Pluronic P123 in EtOH (eq. 1). Au/AlO(OH) catalyzed the oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols to give the corresponding carbonyl products in up to 99% yield (eq. 2, 16 examples). When the reaction of benzyl alcohol with Au/AlO(OH) was carried out in the presence of ketones, the corresponding dehydrative aldol products (Claisen-Schmit products) were obtained in up to 90% yield (eq. 3, 4 examples).
