Significance
A one-pot, microwave-assisted aza-Wittig reaction of commercially available 2-aminobenzylphosphonium salt with a variety of aromatic aldehydes to furnish 2-substituted indoles in good to excellent yield is reported. In a preliminary study, only a spiro compound A was isolated when 2-aminobenzylphosphonium salt reacted with isatin. Aldehyde with EDGs and EWGs give equally efficient results; however, substituted 2-aminobenzylphosphonium salts were not studied.
