Virtual Reality based concepts in medicine and rheumatologyZUSAMMENFASSUNG
SUMMARY
Virtual Reality (VR) refers to the representation and simultaneous perception of reality and its physical properties in a real-time computer-generated, interactive virtual environment. VR is now successfully used in medicine and has gained prominence in medical education as well as in patient treatment. Established areas of application include surgical training as well as the treatment of anxiety disorders and phobias. In rheumatology, VR has received little attention and use so far. There are first data in patients with fibromyalgia, where VR is used to change pain perception. A rheumatology didactic VR application focusing on typical osseous changes in rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis has been developed and is now successfully used in teaching at selected sites.
