Die Tracheotomie hat sich in den letzten Jahren von einer komplexen, chirurgischen Prozedur zu einer perkutanen Intervention gewandelt, die der Intensivmediziner bettseitig durchführen kann. Unter Beachtung der Kontraindikationen und bei Einhaltung eines standardisierten Algorithmus ist die perkutane Dilatationstracheotomie (PDT) in den Händen des erfahrenen Intensivmediziners ein sicheres Verfahren mit geringen Komplikationsraten.
