Significance

Conjugated polymers with alternating donor-acceptor repeat units can present reversible colored to clear transitions when undergoing oxidation and reduction reactions. However, most of these polymers cannot be processed in solution, which is most desired for device fabrication. In this paper the synthesis of polymer P1, which is solution-processable, is reported. After film casting, the ancillary long alkyl chains can be removed via saponification, and the resulting film of polymer P2 shows reversible electrochromic switching.
