Significance

In this report a rapid two-step synthesis of diphenylquinoline and acenaphthoquinoline derivatives was developed. The method utilizes a tetrakis(dimethylamino)ethylene (TDAE)-induced nitrobenzylcarbanion addition to α-diketones followed by iron-catalyzed reduction and cyclodehydration. Selective mono-addition to the α-diketones was observed without the formation of double-addition products even in the presence of excess nitrobenzyl anion or increased reaction times.
