Significance

Functionalized monolithic mesoporous silicas, NH2-MonoSil and HSO3-MonoSil, were applied to the microreactor matrices for Knoevenagel reaction and transesterification, respectively. Thus, the Knoevenagel reaction of benzaldehyde with ethyl cyanoacetate in the NH2-MonoSil-installed microreactor with 0.5 mL/min of flow rate gave ethyl α-cyanocinnamate in 84% for 28 h on stream (TON = 2280). The transesterification of triacetin with methanol was performed in the HSO3-MonoSil-installed microreactor at 333 K to afford glycerol in 79% yield.
