Significance

Benzylidene diacetates (fifteen examples) were prepared from aromatic aldehydes in the presence of a silica-bonded S-sulfonic acid (SBSSA) under solvent-free conditions. Several aldehydes were converted into the corresponding benzylidene diacetates in high yield (91-72%) within 2-4 min. SBSSA 2 was reused up to twenty times and no significant loss in the catalytic activity was observed.
