Significance

Ruthenium nanoparticles entrapped in highly porous aluminum oxyhydroxide [Ru/AlO(OH)] were applied to the one-pot oxidation-Wittig reaction. Thus, the Ru/AlO(OH) 1 was prepared from ruthenium(III) chloride hydrate, EtOH, and Al(s-OBu)3 according to the reported procedures (Org. Lett. 2006, 8, 2543). The one-pot oxidation-Wittig reaction of benzyl alcohol with Ph3P=CHCO2Me was carried out with Ru/AlO(OH) to give the methyl cinnamate in 94% yield. Catalyst 1 was recovered and reused four times with an eventual gradual decrease in activity.
