Intrusive und als quälend empfundene Gedanken sind Kardinalsymptome der Zwangserkrankung, die auf Standardinterventionen oft nur unzureichend ansprechen. Trotz großer Fortschritte in der psychopharmakologischen sowie verhaltenstherapeutischen Behandlung von Zwängen stellt sich – wenn man die Abbruchraten im Verlauf der Therapie berücksichtigt – nur bei circa der Hälfte der Patienten eine substanzielle Besserung der Symptomatik ein. Um dem daraus abgeleiteten Bedarf an ergänzenden Therapien nachzukommen, wurde von unserer Arbeitsgruppe eine neue Methode zur Reduktion von Zwangsgedanken entwickelt: Die sogenannte „Assoziationsspaltung“ basiert auf dem kognitiven Prinzip der Assoziationsauffächerung („fan effect“) und zielt auf die Ausbildung und Stärkung neutraler Assoziationen. Erste Ergebnisse stützen die Wirksamkeit des Ansatzes.

One of the key features of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is the re-occurrence of upsetting, intrusive thoughts. Despite considerable progress in both the psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatment of OCD, only approximately half of the patients benefit substantially from treatment when drop-outs are considered. To meet the need for additional treatment, our group developed a new cognitive technique aimed at reducing intrusive thoughts (association splitting). This technique is based on the so-called „fan effect“ of associative priming and supports the formation of new, and the strengthening of existing, neutral associations. The result of pilot studies confirm the effectiveness of this approach.
