Significance

Hf(OTf)4 is reported as a powerful catalyst for thioacetalization and transthioacetali­zation. Sterically hindered substrates react efficiently and many sensitive functionalities are tolerated. The reaction proceeds in a chemoselective manner with a preference for aromatic aldehydes over benzylic aldehydes and ketones.
