Abstract

A phytochemical investigation of four Salsola species wildly grown in the Egyptian desert viz. S. tetrandra, S. kali, S. longifolia and S. rigida was undertaken.

The study of the carbohydrates revealed the presence of fructose, glucose, arabinose and rhamnose in the four species. The study of the lipids of the four plants showed the presence of oleic, linoleic, arachidic, palmitic and stearic acids in the fatty acids fraction and the occurrence of eicosanol, β–sitosterol and an unidentified steroid substance in the unsaponifiable fraction of the four Salsola species.
