Abstract

Control over the electronic structure in π-conjugated polymers is of great importance for the development of organic electronics and spintronics. In this study, we synthesized a sheathed cross-conjugated polythiophene through oxidative electrochemical polymerization. Spectroelectrochemistry has revealed that unlike linearly conjugated polythiophenes, polarons were confined in the repeating units that were segmented by cross-conjugation.

  • 18 Synthesis of 1βBrUnder Ar atmosphere, a hexane solution of n-butyllithium (1.6 M, 1.06 mL, 1.7 mmol) was added to a solution of (300 mg, 0.55 mmol) in dry THF (30 mL) at 0 °C. The solution was stirred for 1 h and cooled to –78 °C. A THF solution of tetrabromomethane (1.1 g, 3.3 mmol, in 4 mL THF) was slowly added, and the reaction mixture was stirred for 12 h while the temperature was gradually increased to room temperature. The mixture was diluted with chloroform, washed with brine, and dried over anhydrous MgSO4. Insoluble materials were filtered off, and solvent was evaporated. Reprecipitation from chloroform solution with hexane gave a pale-yellow powder (228 mg). Because of its low solubility, 1βBr was used without further purification. MALDI TOF MS (dithranol): m/z calcd for [M + Na+] C32H32Br2O4S2Na: 725.00; found: 724.91.
  • 19 Synthesis of 2βUnder Ar atmosphere, a DMF solution (10 mL) of 1βBr (200 mg, 0.28 mmol), 2-(tributylstannyl)-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (733 mg, 1.7 mmol), and bis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(II) dichloride (20 mg, 0.028 mmol) was stirred at 80 °C for 12 h. The reaction mixture was diluted with chloroform, washed with brine, and dried over anhydrous MgSO4. Insoluble materials were filtered off, and the solvent was evaporated. The residue was washed with hexane and methanol. The solid residue was further purified by size exclusion chromatography (78 mg, 34%). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3, 298 K): δ = 7.39 (t, J = 8.4 Hz, 2 H), 6.92 (s, 2 H), 6.73 (d, J = 8.4 Hz, 4 H), 6.09 (s, 2 H), 4.17 (m, 8 H), 4.01 (m, 4 H), 3.79 (m, 4 H), 1.49 (m, 8), 1.19 (m, 4 H), 0.97 (m, 4 H). 13C NMR (100 MHz, CDCl3, 298 K): δ = 159.24, 141.89, 136.97, 132.65, 132.46, 130.47, 129.71, 122.06, 116.50, 113.16, 107.95, 95.86, 70.57, 64.65, 30.16, 27.04. MALDI TOF MS (dithranol): m/z calcd for [M+] C44H42O8S4: 826.18; found: 826.56.
