Significance

Commercially available magnetic iron oxide particles matrixed with starch (Æ ∪100 nm) (A) were treated with POCl3 to afford the phosphate functional group enriched particles B. The phosphate-enriched magnetic particles were added to an aqueous solution of Pd(acac)2 to form reddish-brown particles C. The Pd(II) supported by magnetic particles was reduced with ethylene glycol under thermal conditions to give black magnetic particles D. The resulting particles D bearing ultra-small palladium nanoparticles catalyzed the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of PhBr and PhB(OH)2 as well as the Heck reaction of PhBr and styrene.
