Dr. Steven D. Wexner is Chief of Staff and Chairman of the Department of Colorectal Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston, Florida, and a major figure in colorectal surgery. Steve was born in New York and received his undergraduate degree from New York's Columbia University. He earned his M.D. degree from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. After completing a general surgery residency at Roosevelt Hospital in New York, he pursued his fellowship training in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota. He then joined the staff at the Cleveland Clinic Florida, and assumed prominent leadership positions at this prestigious institution in relatively rapid progression.

Steve is actively involved in surgical education as he is a Professor of Surgery at Ohio State University and the University of Siena, Siena, Italy; he is also a Clinical Professor at the University of South Florida. His contributions to the medical literature are extensive with his authoring or coauthoring 26 books, 189 chapters, and over 400 articles. He frequently lectures around the world and has an international reputation. His annual course in Florida has a large American and international attendance; it is considered one of the top colorectal surgery meetings-eclipsed only by the annual American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons meeting. Steve is a member of all the major medical societies and recently served as President of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons. Dr. Wexner is an active researcher, but still maintains a busy clinical practice in which the management of inflammatory bowel disease including Crohn's disease plays a major role.

Steve, his wife Nicole, and their children Wesley, Trevor, Marisa, and Gabby live in Boca Raton, Florida. When not working, Steve prefers to spend time with his kids (which many of us know is almost a fulltime job), and traveling with his family.

Steve is a good friend and one of the leaders of our specialty. On behalf of the readers and staff of Clinics in Colon and Rectal Surgery, I sincerely thank Dr. Wexner for finding time in his prodigious schedule to serve as a Guest Editor and for providing us with such a superb issue on Crohn's disease.
