Significance

This report describes an aluminum oxidation catalyst that works in the presence of aqueous hydrogen peroxide. This is a rare example of aluminum functioning in an asymmetric induction fashion in the presence of water. Very high ee values are obtained for a variety of arylmethyl sulfide in their oxidation to sulfoxides. Alkylalkyl sulfides fare slightly worse than their arylalkyl sulfide counterparts.
