Abstract

Many elderly patients suffer from obstructive sleep apnea in need of treatment (OSA), reject however the initiation of nocturnal nCPAP therapy frequently. Diagnostics and treatment attempts are complex, cost-intensive and for patients as well as therapists frustrating thereby. Of 57 men and 69 women with a mean age of approximately 80 years and in need of treatment 18 (16%) could be adjusted to nCPAP therapy successfully. These patients had a positive mask acceptance test. All patients with a negative mask acceptance refused nCPAP therapy. No other patient parameter correlated significantly with the successful initiation of nCPAP therapy.

That mask acceptance test which can be accomplished simply and economically identifies reliably elderly patients with successfully initiation of nCPAP therapy.
