Significance
This method is a new application of the known Zr-catalyzed cyclopropanation of alkynes with ethylmagnesium bromide. Substituted cyclopropyl-phosphonates possess a broad range of biological activity and therefore are interesting synthetic targets. Besides, this reaction is a useful step toward the development of a general method for the metal-catalyzed transformation of alkynes into cyclopropanes, based on organometallic chemistry.
