Significance

The synthesis of phthalimidine derivatives from the reaction of benzal imines and aryl isocyanates via rhenium-catalyzed C-H bond activation is reported. Under catalytic conditions, [ReBr(CO)3(THF)]2 using imines bearing both electron-withdrawing and electron-donating substituents lead to good to excellent yields of products. Allylisothiocyanate and phenylisothiocyanate were found not to undergo this reaction. The reaction of benzalimines with acetylenes to give indenes was also reported.
