Significance
The ethylene-3,4-dioxythiophene (EDOT) motif is ubiquitous in the field of electroactive conjugated polymers, such as in the poly(EDOT)-poly(styrene sufonate) (PEDOT-PSS) combination. The properties of the closely related poly(ethylene-3,4-dithiathiophene) (PEDTT) are, however, as disappointing as those of PEDOT are remarkable. The design, synthesis and thorough study of well-defined polymers containing varying ratios of the two monomers has yielded insight into the nature of secondary interactions and key conformational effects that give rise to these large differences.
