Summary
Studies have identified intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors for implant-related fractures. The intrinsic factors reported to be associated with an increased risk of implant-related fracture include older age, lower canal flare index and poorer bone quality. Extrinsic factors include fracture as an indication for the index surgery compared with all other reasons for the index operation, use of a gamma nail compared with the compression hip screw or cannulated screw for hip fixation, and revision hip arthroplasty compared with primary hip arthroplasty for index surgery.
