Significance

The esterifications of seven alcohols and six carboxylic acids were found to proceed very smoothly in the presence of 2-chloro-1-methylpyridinium iodide (the so-called Mukaiyama reagent) supported on polystyrene resin with the aid of microwave heating. All reactions were performed at 80 °C for 4-18 minutes in CH2Cl2 and Et3N to give high yields (64-96%) of the esters via simple filtration of resin (20 examples).

Comment

The authors have recently reported the synthesis of the polymer-supported Mukaiyama reagent (J. Org. Chem. 2004, 69, 9316-9318).
