Grußwort

Zum 20. Geburtstag möchte ich KORA und seiner Mannschaft im Namen der Stadt Augsburg ganz herzlich gratulieren. Augsburg ist KORA dankbar für die positiven Effekte für unsere Stadt, wir sind aber auch ein wenig stolz auf unseren Beitrag.

Die Geschichte begann vor 20 Jahren - mit dem Aufruf der WHO im Jahre 1984 und dem Start eines weltweiten Forschungsprojekts über Trends und Einflussfaktoren von Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen. Damals wurde Augsburg eines der vier deutschen MONICA-Zentren.

Bald wurde MONICA in der Region Augsburg bekannt. Rund 14 000 Einwohner nahmen insgesamt an einer der Erhebungen in den Jahren 1984/85, 1989/90 und 1994/95 teil.

Die große Teilnahmebereitschaft der Augsburger Bevölkerung an Studien zur Gesundheit machte unsere Stadt zu einer attraktiven Region für bevölkerungsbasierte prospektive Gesundheitsforschungen.

So war es nur folgerichtig, die positiven Erfahrungen zu nutzen und nach Abschluss der WHO-Studie im Jahre 1995 mit der Forschung fortzufahren, sie sogar auszuweiten. MONICA wandelte sich in KORA.

Die damit verbundene Einbeziehung der Umwelteinflüsse in die Forschung freut mich als Gesundheits- und Umweltreferent besonders.

Somit zeichnen sich wichtige Ergebnisse von KORA auch unmittelbar für unsere Stadt ab:

• Mit KORA wird der Name unserer Stadt in alle Welt getragen.

• KORA liefert mit seinen Untersuchungen wertvolle Hinweise für die Prävention.

• Wir haben Dank KORA weitere gesicherte Hinweise über Zusammenhänge zwischen Umwelteinflüssen und bestimmten Erkrankungen.

KORA hat bereits zu Konsequenzen für unsere kommunalen Aktivitäten geführt bzw. sie unterstützt. Zwei Beispiele:

• Augsburg ist die zweite Stadt in Deutschland und eine der ersten in der EU, die auf der Grundlage von Grenzwert-Überschreitungen bei den Feinststäuben in der Luft einen „Luftreinhalteplan” erstellt hat. Die Installation des Luftreinhalteplans für die Stadt Augsburg soll helfen, Erkenntnisse aus der Gesundheits- und Umweltforschung umzusetzen.

• Der Prävention hat sich die Stadt Augsburg sowohl im Gesundheits- wie im Umweltbereich ganz besonders verpflichtet. Am Gesundheitsamt werden mit der Einrichtung einer eigenen Abteilung „Gesundheitsförderung” die vielfältigen Aspekte der Prävention gebündelt und so die Aktivitäten intensiviert.

So möchte ich Ihnen, dem gesamten KORA-Team und der GSF, auch im Namen von Oberbürgermeister Dr. Paul Wengert, für Ihre geleistete Arbeit danken und hoffe, dass Sie noch lange den Namen Augsburg in die Welt der Wissenschaft tragen. Vor allem aber wünsche ich uns allen, dass die Erkenntnisse Ihrer Forschungen in reale Veränderungen umgesetzt werden.

In the name of the city of Augsburg, I would like to offer hearty congratulations to KORA and its whole team on the occasion of its 20th birthday. Augsburg is grateful to KORA for the positive impact on our city, but we are also a little proud of our contribution.

The story began 20 years ago - with the call by the WHO in 1984, and the start of a world-wide research project on trends and factors influencing cardiovascular diseases. At that time Augsburg became one of the four German MONICA centres.

MONICA soon became known in the Augsburg region. Approximately 14,000 inhabitants altogether participated in the separate surveys carried out in the years 1984/85, 1989/90, and 1994/95. The great willingness of the Augsburg population to participate in health studies made our city an attractive area for prospective population-based health research.

Thus it was only logical to build on this positive experience and to continue with the research - and even expand it - after conclusion of the WHO study in 1995. MONICA became KORA.

The inclusion of environmental influences into the research makes me, as Health and Environment Officer, particularly happy.

Important results have come from KORA that are also of direct value for our city:

• KORA carries the name of our city across the world.

• With its investigations KORA supplies valuable pointers for prevention.

• Thanks to KORA, we have more firm indications about the relationship between environmental influences and particular diseases.

KORA has already led to consequences for, and supported, our local activities, respectively; two examples:

• Augsburg is the second city in Germany and one of the first in the European Union to prepare a ‘clean air plan’ based on exceeding limits for fine particle content in air. The establishment of a clean air plan for Augsburg is intended to help the implementation of measures using the knowledge gained from health and environmental research.

• The city of Augsburg has committed itself strongly to prevention in both the health and environmental sector. At the local Health Authority the establishment of a separate ‘Department of Health Promotion’ has brought the many different aspects of prevention together and thereby intensified the activities.

So I would like to thank you, the entire KORA team and the GSF, also in the name of the Mayor Dr. Paul Wengert, for the work that you have achieved, and hope that you will continue to take the name of Augsburg out into the world of science for a long time. Above all, however, I wish us all that the results of your research can be converted into real changes.
