ABSTRACT

Image-guided percutaneous abdominal and pelvic abscess drainage in children can be performed successfully with an understanding of the issues unique in the pediatric population. Most techniques are similar to those learned in adult practice, but the incidence of underlying diseases differs from that in adults. This article reviews the basic principles and techniques of percutaneous abscess drainage with special emphasis on the factors that differ from adults to children. Published experience with percutaneous abscess drainage in children is summarized, and etiologies of abscesses in specific sites are reviewed.
