Abstract
A concise stereoselective synthesis of (Z)-1,2-bis(arylsulfanyl)ethenes by the reaction of arylsulfonyl chlorides with calcium carbide in the presence of cuprous iodide as a catalyst is described. The salient features of this protocol are its use of an inexpensive and easily handled solid alkyne source as a surrogate for flammable and explosive gaseous acetylene, its commercially available starting materials, its high stereoselectivity, and its simple workup procedures. The stereochemical structure of a selected product was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. This method can be extended to a gram scale.

- 9 (Z)-1,2-Bis(arylsulfanyl)ethenes 2a–r: General Procedure A mixture of CaC2 (0.6 mmol), CuI (0.1 mmol), and H2O (1.2 mmol) in DMF (2 mL) was heated in an oil bath at 100 °C for 15 min. A solution of the appropriate arylsulfonyl chloride 1 (0.2 mmol) in DMF (0.5 mL) was then added, and the mixture was heated in an oil bath at 100 °C for 4 h. When the reaction was complete, the resulting mixture was filtered to remove the solid, and the liquor was extracted with EtOAc (3 × 10 mL), and washed with sat. brine (3 × 10 mL). The resulting organic phase was dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by column chromatography [silica gel, PE–EtOAc (100:1)].
