Late complications after cohlear implantation
Cochlear implantation is reliable and safe procedure, with low percentage of severe complications when performed by experienced surgeons.
The aim of our study was to review the cochlear implantation surgical complications in our clinic. There have been no deaths, a few serious major complications, and relatively few minor complications. Major complications are usually attributed to surgical technique and include flap problems and cholesteatoma. Minor complications are tinnitus, dehiscence of incisions, altered facial nerve sensation, dizziness, etc.
Our results confirm that cochlear implantation is safe and most surgical complications can be managed by conservative measures or minimal intervention. All patients should receive lifetime follow-up.
