Das Robert-Koch-Institut empfiehlt die Erhebung des CMV-Serostatus zu Beginn der Schwangerschaft. Das Wissen um einen CMV-seronegativen Ausgangsstatus bei Schwangeren in Zusammenhang mit einer spezifischen Beratung führt zu einer 50%igen Reduktion der maternalen Infektionsrate während der Schwangerschaft. Die Cytomegalie-Infektion des Fetus sollte unbedingt vermieden werden, da sie für die Kinder schwerwiegende Folgen haben kann.
