Significance

Bifunctional mesoporous organosilicas having organic amines and sulfonic acid groups (PMO-SO3H-NH2) were prepared from 1,4-bis(triethoxysilyl)benzene via the sequence shown in the first scheme. The PMO-SO3H-NH2 promoted one-pot deacetalization-nitroaldol reaction of benzaldehyde dimethyl acetal with nitromethane to give nitrostyrene in 97.5% yield.
