Significance
Neostenine belongs to the Stemona alkaloids, which are isolated from the Stemonacae plants. Extracts of these plants have been used in Chinese and Japanese folk medicine for the treatment of bronchitis, tuberculosis and parasitic infestations. In this synthesis the pyrrolo[1,2-a]azepine core is constructed by a photochemically-induced [5+2] cycloaddition.
