Abstract
The number of patients with implanted cardiac pacemakers (PM) is continuously growing. Conventional PM systems are no longer an absolute but rather a relative contraindication for performing an MR examination. MRI scans on patients with so-called “MRl conditional” pacemakers can only be safely performed if certain requirements are met. Therefore, the indication for an MRI examination on patients with implanted cardiac pacemakers should be determined on a stricter basis and the risk/benefit ratio should be critically reviewed. This article summarizes the requirements that have to be considered when performing an MRl-examination on patients with pacemakers. Furthermore, it discusses strategies for clinical routine as this complex topic demands for a close collaboration between radiologists and cardiologists.
