Multiple Sklerose und Fettsäuren – historischer und aktueller Studienstand

Zusammenfassung

Schon in den 1950er-Jahren gab es Hinweise auf Zusammenhänge zwischen Fettsäuren in der Ernährung und Multipler Sklerose (MS). In den kommenden Jahrzehnten konnte dann aufgedeckt werden, über welche Mechanismen bestimmte Fettsäuren pro- oder anti-inflammatorisch wirken. Weitere Studien konnten belegen, dass die Omega-3-Fettsäuren EPA/DHA Entzündungsmediatoren senken können. Weitere Symptome wie Depression, Schübe oder Stoffwechselparameter konnten laut Studien ebenfalls gebessert werden.

Abstract

Already in the 1950s there were indications of a connection between fatty acids in the diet and multiple sclerosis (MS). In the decades that followed, it was possible to discover the mechanisms by which certain fatty acids have a pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory effect. Further studies have shown that the omega-3 fatty acids EPA/DHA can reduce inflammation mediators. According to studies, it has also been possible, to improve other symptoms such as depression, relapses or metabolic parameters.
