Abstract

Every third child shows sleep problems during the first years of life [12]. In infants, toddlers and school-age children, sleep disorders are often caused by parental misjudgment of the child‘s needs. For adolescents, a poor fit between sleep physiological conditions and social demands plays an important role. The aim of professional counselling is to provide parents and adolescents with knowledge about normal development of sleep and the large interindividual variability with regard to individual sleep characteristics in order to enable them to recognize and classify the sleep problem and to find appropriate solutions. Counselling young people requires a high degree of cooperation from them.

This article presents the three-step model of the Child Development Center of the University Children’s Hospital in three different age groups.
