Oral mucositis: Treatment and prevention
Sir,
We have read with great interest the article entitled “Treatment and prevention of oral mucositis: A literature review.”[[1]] Oral mucositis (OM) is a common disorder in patients under treatment with radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy. It corresponds to a side effect of chemotherapy, head-and-neck radiotherapy, and targeted therapy. Despite advances in the treatment of cancer, OM continues to be an oncologic challenge in the context of antineoplastic therapy for head-and-neck cancer because it is a dose-limiting toxicity of chemotherapy and radiation treatment with negative impacts on the quality of life and cancer treatment efficacy.[[2]] Overall, patients with OM suffer from malignant diseases and/or require hematopoietic stem cell transplants.[[1]] In this connection, the role of dentists in the prevention and/or treatment of OM in hospitals and blood centers is essential. Thus, all health centers and hospitals offering these treatments should have dentists on staff for a comprehensive treatment of the patients.
