Antral Puncture and Antral Lavage in Sinusitis
Background and Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of antral lavage in acute and chronic sinusitis.
Material and Method: Between 2001 and 2005, 150 patients with persistent acute or recurrent sinusitis underwent paracentesis and catheterization of the maxillary antrum. Through the catheter, the maxillary antrum was lavaged with antibiotic.
Results: Out of the 150 patients, 35 had a relapse and 115 were symptom free during a 2-year follow-up. Out of the 35 patients with relapse, 20 where lavaged again and 15 were treated with FESS.
Conclusion: Because of the convenience of antral puncture and lavage under local anesthesia, it remains a reliable alternative before the patient is treated with FESS.
