Significance
Octalactin A possesses cytotoxicity against some human tumor cell lines. A noteworthy step in the synthesis depicted is the vanadium-catalyzed oxidative kinetic resolution of the α-hydroxy ester A followed by a recombination of E and F thereby allowing effective use of both products C and D of the asymmetric operation.
