Significance

The rosamine derivatives 2a-c were prepared in good to moderate yields from ketone 1. The thioether analogue 2c has a higher fluorescence quantum yield, along with significantly red-shifted absorbance and emission spectra compared to the amino analogues. Secondary amine analogues (not shown) display comparable quantum yields to 2c, but their absorbance and emission spectra are blue-shifted relative to 2a and 2b.
