Evaluation of the Wound-healing Activityof SL-SA-09 in Rats
The current study was undertaken to evaluate the wound healing potential of SL-SA-09 (polyherbal) in Wistar rats. A full-thickness wound was created on the dorsum of rats and the progression of wound contraction was monitored periodically by tracing the wound size on to a transparency paper. The wound areas were calculated using a graph paper. The collagen synthesis, nitric oxide content and histopathological parameters were evaluated at various post-treatment days in control, SL-SA-09 (test) or Allenzyme (positive control) treated group of rats. SL-SA-09 resulted in a steady contraction of excision wounds with time and the contraction was statistically significant (p < 0.05) when compared to control. The application of SL-SA-09 significantly (p < 0.01) reduced the mean wound healing time. Estimation of collagen and nitric oxide content after topical application of SL-SA-09 suggested wound healing efficiency. Histological sections of granulation tissue from SL-SA-09-treated rats showed increased and well-organized bands of collagen, more fibroblasts and few inflammatory cells. Granulation tissue sections obtained from control rats revealed more inflammatory cells and less collagen fibers and fibroblasts. The morphological and biochemical studies indicated that SL-SA-09 significantly improved the overall wound healing compared to control. Enhanced wound contraction, increased collagen content and histological characteristics suggest that SL-SA-09 may have therapeutic value in diabetic wounds.
