Abstract

A major triterpenoid saponin of the fruit of Gleditsia japonica Miq. was isolated to designate gleditsia saponin C (GS-C).

On mild alkaline hydrolysis of GS-C, three monoterpene carboxylic acids (IV, VI and VII) were separated to remain a bisdesmoside, GS-C'. The structure of IV was established to be (+)2,6-dimethyl-6(S)hydroxyl-2-trans-2,7-octadienoic acid.

The compound (VII) is an artifact derived from the ester form of IV, while VI is possibly derived from (+)2-hydroxymethyl-6-methyl-6(S)-hydroxyl-2-trans-2,7-octadienoic acid (VIII) which attaches to GS-C' with an ester linkage.
