Significance

Iodomethylation and iodohydroxylation of alkenes and alkynes mediated by m-iodosylbenzoic acid 1 were described. Thus, the reaction of alkenes 2 (0.3 mmol) was performed with 1 (0.11 mmol) and I2 (0.10 mmol) in MeOH to give the corresponding products 3 and m-iodobenzoic acid 4. The oxidation of 6 with I2 and H2O in MeCN was promoted by 1 to give 7. Alkynes 8 underwent the double iodoalkoxylation, successively, under similar conditions to give 9.
