Summary
This introductory chapter outlines the basic functional principles of eye movements and of their cerebral control, subserving the 2 goals of gaze-shifting (placing the fovea of both eyes on-target) and gaze-holding (preventing shifts of the retinal image). To cover different aspects of these goals we have 6 ocular motor subsystems that are controlled by distinct brain structures: saccades, smooth pursuit eye movements, optokinetic nystagmus, the vestibulo-ocular reflex, vergence, and fixation.
