Summary
In the prism variator on phorometers, stronger prisms are needed than in spectacles; errors are small for far vision, but may be significant for near vision. Concave spherocylindrical lenses diminish the prismatic effect of prisms; convex lenses increase it. The error is relevant for far and near vision with spherical equivalents over 4-5 D. The approximation “(pD) = 2×(degrees)” produces inaccuracies of over 10% for values below 20 degrees and above 45 degrees. Patients with compensatory head position should not be refracted with a phorometer.
