Intravenously injected horseradish peroxidase diffuses from the choriocapillaris, fills the basal infoldings of the RPE, but is stopped in the intercellular space at the constricted junctions.
Summary
Intravenously injected horseradish peroxidase diffuses from the choriocapillaris, fills the basal infoldings of the RPE, but is stopped in the intercellular space at the constricted junctions. The authors observed that peroxidase is endocytosed by coated pits and coated vesicles in the basal part of the epithelial cell. This constitutes a selective pathway through the external blood-retinal barrier.
