Summary
In drone photoreceptors, a light flash causes an increase in oxygen consumption that returns to the baseline within about 12 seconds. The light-induced increase in work, mainly ion pumping, continues for longer than this. The authors have now shown that there is a transient increase in ATP concentration. They speculate that the mitochondrial respiration is stimulated by the arrival of metabolic substrate from the glial cells.
