Einleitung

Unfallverletzungen der Zähne sind häufig. Etwa 40 % der Kinder und Jugendlichen haben bis zu ihrem 18. Lebensjahr nachweisbar einen Unfall mit Zahnverletzungen erlitten. Die Unfallhäufigkeit nimmt weiter zu, u. a. durch risikobehaftete Trendsportarten und steigende Gewaltbereitschaft. Neben die teils gravierenden medizinischen und psychologischen Folgen von Zahnverletzungen treten hohe Kosten. Sie betrafen im Jahr 2000 die Volkswirtschaften in den Industrieländern mit etwa 2 bis 5 Millionen Dollar pro Jahr und pro Million Einwohner. Mit etwa 80 Millionen Einwohnern muss in Deutschland also von etwa 400 Millionen Dollar jährlichen Kosten durch Zahnverletzungen ausgegangen werden. Nach Zahnverlust im Jugendalter ist mit Folgekosten von 15 000 bis 20 000 Euro zu rechnen.

Merke: 40 % der Kinder und Jugendlichen erleiden bis zum 18. Lebensjahr Zahnverletzungen durch einen Unfall!
