Significance
This publication is the first report on the Heck reaction of unactivated alkyl halides, possessing α-hydrogen. While similar cyclizations could be performed via radical intermediates, this method is milder and more suitable for the use in complex molecules. It is an important step in the development of the methodology of selective new C-C bond formation, as well as a useful synthetic pathway to polyfunctionalized carbocyclic molecules. It opens new perspectives for the classical Heck reaction.
